Rye Town Park is a 62-acre jewel on the Long Island Sound in Rye, welcoming local residents and out-of-town visitors alike to its green hills and sandy beach.

The Friends of Rye Town Park is a small 501(c)3 not-for-profit volunteer group, proudly celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2021.  We beautify and improve the park, focusing on sustainable gardening and land management, park programming and amenities.  Thanks to our generous donors, our valued community partners and our committed volunteers, our list of 2021 achievements is long.  Highlights include:

  • Planting and maintaining a “Pollinator Paradise” of native, pollinator-friendly flora throughout the park, including the gardens on the exterior perimeter, and installing two honey-producing beehives in the pond area, all of which resulted in a meaningful increase in bees, butterflies and other pollinators in the park this year;

  • Purchasing an AERAvator, allowing park staff to leverage rainfall to re-seed the great lawn;

  • Funding the one-year installation of the interactive sculpture “Whispers in the Grove”;

  • Partnering with the Rye Historical Society for a curated walk highlighting the park’s rich history;

  • Underwriting the sound engineering for the Hurricane Ida flood relief concert in September;

  • Funding a second water bottle filling station, with attached water fountains for humans and dogs, and two new “shower towers” to improve the bathhouse and main shower area;

  • Underwriting a new raised walkway around the south end of the pond, built by local volunteers;

  • Hosting beach and park cleanup days with volunteers of all ages, and much more!

The year in review

We have big plans for 2022, and we need your help.   We have funded a project to plant over 20,000 daffodil bulbs on the hillside in the park, and we are working on a poetry pathway which will debut soon.  We want to make significant capital investments in several necessary improvement projects and to fund expansion and maintenance of our Pollinator Paradise gardens. When it is safe to gather in large numbers again, we would love to return to celebrations like our Christmas Tree lighting.

All of this requires investment.  If you stroll through the park, or follow us on Instagram, you’ve met our park community.  We come for the sunrises and the gardens; for the early morning swims; for the wide open spaces; for the time with our families and friends (and dogs!), or for a moment to ourselves. Maybe it’s the music or Shakespeare on a summer evening; maybe it’s a fall afternoon game of frisbee or a snowy afternoon of sledding.  Maybe it's a picnic on the grass or a long walk.  We all receive so much from the park.  Now let’s do our part.

In 2021, we committed approximately $80,000 of funding to sustain and improve Rye Town Park. In 2022, our goal is $100,000.  To get there we will need to recruit new donors and to ask our current donors to consider increasing their donations.  Please join us by doing your part for the park - donate at www.friendsofrtp.org or by check payable to the Friends of Rye Town Park.  We’ll see you at the park!

With sincere thanks,

Diana Page
